| Because of the inevitable problems we’ll experience as a result of energy issues, we’re going to be challenged profoundly in the ways we live and sooner than most of us think. As a community, we have two choices: we can sit back and wait, or we can respond proactively and begin making real changes that will lead to a more resilient community. The GREAT UNLEASHING was an Open Space event (see videos below & sidebar) that engaged Bloomington in a collective and committed response, and kicked-off the process of creating a 10-20 year energy descent action plan. We aim to offer a Great Unleashing: part 2 in 2011. Please join our networking site to add your voice to the ongoing planning and action groups.
This event took place April 24th, 2010, 9:30AM-5:30PM, at Bloomington's City Hall Council Chambers, a day of focused co-creation and visioning. The following movie is about surviving and thriving in a very different world. It's Susan Fiskin's take on the Sandpoint, IdahoTransition Initiative "Great Unleashing" in November '08 and an overview of the global phenomenon known as the Transition movement.
"I have been waiting to meet this way for years" -- Open Space Technology participant "I have never seen 175 people running 45 minutes late get themselves back on schedule without anyone prompting them to do so. How did that happen?" -- Open Space Technology sponsor "This is the first time many of our people have met the way their ancestors did" -- Stl'atl'mx Elder |
Networking Join us at our Ning networking site to learn about events and resources and take part in conversations. What is Open Space Technology? Open Space Technology is one way to enable all kinds of people, in any kind of organization, to create inspired meetings and events. Over the last 20+ years, it has also become clear that open space, as an intentional leadership practice, can create inspired organizations, where ordinary people work together to create extraordinary results with regularity. In Open Space meetings, events and organizations, participants create and manage their own agenda of parallel working sessions around a central theme of strategic importance, such as: What is the strategy, group, organization or community that all stakeholders can support and work together to create? With groups of 5 to 2000+ people -- working in one-day workshops, three-day conferences, or the regular weekly staff meeting -- the common result is a powerful, effective connecting and strengthening of what's already happening in the organization: planning and action, learning and doing, passion and responsibility, participation and performance. What happens in Open Space? We never know exactly what will happen when we open the space for people to do their most important work, but we can guarantee these results when any group gets into Open Space: 1. All of the issues that are MOST important to the participants will be raised. 2. All of the issues raised will be addressed by those participants most qualified and capable of getting something done on each of them. 3. In a time as short as one or two days, all of the most important ideas, discussion, data, recommendations, conclusions, questions for further study, and plans for immediate action will be documented in one comprehensive report. 4. When appropriate and time is allowed for it, the total contents of this report document can be focused and prioritized in a matter of a few hours, even with very large groups (100's). 5. After an event, all of these results can be made available to an entire organization or community within days of the event, so the conversation can invite every stakeholder into implementation -- right now. 6. AND... results like these can be planned and implemented faster than any other kind of so-called "large-group intervention." It is literally possible to accomplish in days and weeks what some other approaches take months and years to do. Open Space operates under four principles and one law. The four principles are:
1. Whoever comes are the right people The Law is known as the Law of Two Feet: "If you find yourself in a situation where you are not contributing or learning, move somewhere where you can." For more information about the Open Space process visit these sites... Open
